Moneyball for Employers 2020: Capturing Millennials’ Hearts and Minds

Breakout Session 2 - April 16

Summary
Moneyball, the movie starring Brad Pitt as Billy Bean, begins with the October 15, 2001, American League division series elimination game between the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees. $114,457,768 v $39,722,689 salary comparison between the two teams. Moneyball is the incredibly true story of the 2001 Oakland Athletics baseball team. More specifically, about how their general manager Billy Bean pioneered a new way to see the game, and how it drafted players in a whole new way. So revolutionary that they challenged the way the sport had been played for over 100 years. This came after the Yankees defeated the Oakland A's in 2001 postseason, and many the players that had gotten the Oakland A's to the playoffs were now too expensive for Oakland to re-sign. Billy Bean with his team of 25 baseball’s rejects and misfits, went on to have the longest winning streak in baseball history by learning how to see the true value of every player. The 2020 workforce is demanding the same revolutionary change driven by the Millennials. Can employers benefit from a Moneyball approach like Houston, Chicago, Boston and Oakland have in baseball? We think it can in an impactful way. In the Gallup Press Book (released in May 2019) IT’S THE MANAGER, Gallup finds, from its largest global study of the future of work, that the quality of managers and team leaders is the single biggest factor in your organization’s long-term success. The book has a chapter entitled Moneyball for Employers! To help you wrap your head and heart around these revolutionary workplace change concepts, Jonathan Martin and I will be using 10 clips out of the movie Moneyball, combined with 10 chapters from the IT’S THE MANAGER book, and let you sit behind the plate and see if your business, non-profit or governmental entity, can benefit from a Moneyball approach.
